It’s just my personal impression, but I think the Chinese government is trying to take a more active role in the Middle East and also sees al Jazeera’s recent credibility issues as a chance to put Xinhua forward as a quality news source for the ME (as well as helping the Syrian government get its message out in the face of massive Western disinterest).”
